Am I the only one that’s a just a tiny bit pissed off that this is still an issue?

The Original Series wasn’t even in the general VICINITY of fucking around yo

ameliacgormley

How many shows these days would do this, and do it this way? These days, it would be all, “Ohh, we have to be sensitive and show the nuances of each side” and try not to make either side seem wrong. It wouldn’t be clearly spelled out, “pro-choice is right, if you’re against it you’re the bad guys.”

jacquez45

Jim Kirk is not here for your anti-birth-control, anti-choice, pro-death-penalty BS

chandri

James Tiberius Kirk was written and portrayed as a feminist and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

ellidfics

Yep.  That episode is exactly what you think it is:  pro-birth control, pro-population control, pro-choice, and pro-women’s right to choose.  And yes, Kirk, the supposed playboy of the spaceways, is in favor of all of the above.

It was written and aired in 1969.

It probably couldn’t air today.

THINK ABOUT THAT.

geekygothgirl

Also LMAO at all the sad whiny geek boys who are like “I miss the GOOD OLD DAYS of SCI-FI when it wasn’t all about SOCIAL ISSUES and instead it was just about MEN HAVING FUN IN SPACE. Like Star Trek! Star Trek wouldn’t put up with all this SOCIAL JUSTICE FEMINISM IN SCI FI bullshit!” And meanwhile I’m just over here like “…did you actually watch the show?”

It’s also important to bear in mind that the Original Series had a predominantly female fanbase, and during its initial run, was widely mocked and dismissed by mainstream (i.e., male) science fiction fans as being fake sci-fi for girls. It’s difficult to overstate the influence women had on the franchise in its early days; most of the early Star Trek conventions were organised by and for women, and indeed, those same organisers were primarily responsible for the massive letter-writing campaign that prevented the show from being cancelled after the 1968 season. Without that campaign, the episode pictured in this post would never have been made.

The popular image of James Kirk as a sleazy womaniser is part of a conscious effort to erase that history and render the franchise’s roots palatable to the misogynistic geekboys of the modern SF/F fandom.

fuckyeahsources

For a summary of those points, see “Star Trek’s Underappreciated Feminist History” by Shannon Mizzi, which draws from Patricia Vettel-Becker’s “Space and the Single Girl: Star Trek, Aesthetics, and 1960s Femininity”.

And a gentle reminder that TOS was a Desilu production, which its board of directors voted to cancel after the second pilot due to cost concerns, a vote that Chairman Lucille Ball overruled. There is no Star Trek without Lucille Ball.

Basically you have women to thank for Star Trek. Go suck on that, JJ Abrams.

comtessedebussy

Bringing this back because I recently saw a post from a dudebro complaining about how Star Trek has become all “PC and has an agenda” unlike in the “good old days”

so here is a clip from the “good old days” of Star Trek not having an agenda.

If Asgardians speak English but originate from Scandinavian folklore, then by all rights shouldn’t Thor, Loki, and company sound like they’re from Minnesota?

soozblog

This would get me to watch all the Thor movies.

Thor: Aww geeze, I’m gonna need ya to hand over that tesseract there ya?
Loki: Oh, good ta see ya, too, brother, thanks for askin’ how I was and all there.
Thor: Cheese and crackers, does it seem like I’m in the mood for your games there now then yet?

“One of my favourite Steve Jobs stories was the time the engineers working on the iPod brought their finished prototype to him in his office. He said it was too big, they needed to make it smaller. They said it was as small as they could make it, it couldn’t be made any smaller. So he took the prototype over to his aquarium and dropped it in. The iPod sank to the bottom, and as it did, tiny little bubbles came out. ‘See those bubbles,’ he asked. ‘They’re air inside the iPod. Make it smaller.’

“Another story about Steve Jobs was when they brought the prototype for the iPad 2 to his office. The engineers told him it was faster than the first iPad. He took it over to his aquarium and dropped it in. ‘Look how slowly it sank,’ he told them. ‘Make it faster.’

“One time a newly hired intern had been sent out to get Steve a sandwich. When she brought it to him, he looked at it. ‘I thought I ordered the beef on rye,’ he asked. She told him it was indeed beef on rye. He took it over to his fish tank and dropped it in. ‘Does that look like beef on rye?’

“He was always dropping things in that fish tank. We couldn’t stop him. We told him he had to stop, he wouldn’t listen. It was full of stuff that shouldn’t be in an aquarium.

“The fish had all died years ago. One had been crushed under an early generation iMac. The others were all poisoned. He didn’t care.

“It got to the point where there was no room for anything in the fish tank. When we emptied it after he died, we found a body in there. We never found out who it was.”

so in psychology class we got to learn why foot fetishes are so prevelant! basically your brain stores the structural information for your body generally in the correct order (i.e. the info for your ears is stored next to the info for the head, which is stored next to the neck, etc.) BUT. The info for the feet is stored right next to the info for the genitalia and so sometimes these two sections of information can overlap and make you wanna lick some toes

puff-to-tuff

thanks, i hate it

Normally when y’all post this kinda shit it’s blatantly incorrect, but I’m angry to say that this one is absolutely factual

baaahumbug

Shdbdjasasdhsd in my biology and anatomy class our teacher was showing us a diagram of the cortex placements and I tell you, nothing can prepare a class of first year university students for seeing an illustrated photograph of a penis and foot resting up against each other and our lecturer saying completely dead panned “this is why toe fetishes exist” there was anarchy that day. I’ll find the diagram later if I remember so you can all suffer with us

Anonymous asked:

Why is it that lesbians always want the couple they can't have. for example on glee they had santana and brittany but they wanted faberry on jane the virgin they have rose and luisa but they want jane and petra, and on supergirl they get not alex and maggie but they want lena and kara? why?

lenacorp answered:

i…….. i don’t even know where to start answering this question.

y’all straights had abby and marcus and lincoln and octavia, so why do you want clarke and bellamy? you also had quinn and puck so why did u need rachel with finn? there was snow white and david on ouat, so why did you need emma and hook?

but you have this privilege that you have so many straights on all shows, and you think that you can give us ONE couple on a show and you feel like you did us a favor. “one couple is more than they need” as if we will all automatically ship those two people and relate to them.

not to mention that a man and a woman just breathe in the same room and everyone is already like YEP SOULMATES, HAVE U SEEN THE CHEMISTRY. but two women can be perfect for each other and y’all are like “but they’re two women! we never saw them date other women, and besides there’s already ONE lesbian couple on this show so”

did you ever watch grey’s anatomy and see cristina interact with owen but be like “there’s already meredith and derek as a couple, so these two obviously can’t be a ship”?

have you maybe considered that i ship two characters, not just because they’re both girls, but because i see that they have chemistry and that their personalities match so well? i wanted faberry because brittana wasn’t really my thing. i thought that faberry were much cuter together and would match perfectly. when it comes to supergirl, i love sanvers with my whole heart. but i also happen to love supercorp bc i think they’d be a perfect match.

so, instead of asking why, i’ll ask you - why not?

thatmitchsentho

First - go off. Yes. All of this.

Second - can’t help but notice there’s another commonality amongst the ships we’ve been told to sit down, shut up and be happy with. What’s that? Oh yeah - they’re all secondary characters. Because to a whole lotta straight people, we’re still the fucking sideline, still the B-plot. We’re the crumbs while you get the feast.
